I vowed to make music that protects our heritage-Angela Nyirenda

AT only 26 years of age, one of Zambia’s legendary song birds Angela Nyirenda made a bold decision to sing about tradition

Nyirenda narrated how she embarked on the journey of being a musician and how she vowed to make music that would protect Zambia’s heritage.

However, this decision was not well received by most people of her age and friends as they thought it was too much for a 26 year old.

“I started music at 26 years just after college at Evelyn Hone College and people were shocked to see a young lady singing about tradition. People were like what does she think, it was quite difficult for people to get used but they later accepted that it was what I chose,” said Nyirenda.

Since the year 2004, the music icon has managed to stick to her vow as she has continued to make traditional music focused on cultural values and beliefs such as one of her most loved albums Malo Abwino which also happens to be her debut album.

She shared that through her music many youths have been privileged to learn about their culture.

“My music is about preserving our culture, so many people have learnt about their culture through my music.”

“My music is now used at weddings and kitchen parties, I’m also a counselor and people hire me. For all these years I can say I have received so much support from people and I don’t regret my decision,” she stated.

As a way of celebrating her two decades of music, Angela Nyirenda is holding a concert this August on the 24th at Mulungushi International Conference Center KK Wing.
