A month-old infant has diêd after being punched in the head by the father during a marital dispute.
The incident happened after Mary Chinyemba, 30, advised her husband, Yona Nali, 25, not to be moving at night as it could be dangerous.
Copperbelt police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba said the couple had a conversation as a family on Wednesday until around 21:00 hours when the husband told his wife that he was going out to socialise with his friends within the township.
However, this did not sit well with the wife, who advised him that moving at night could be dangerøus.
Mr Mweemba explained that the disagreement escalated into a physical altercation, which led to neighbours intervening as the fight went outside.
The neighbours are said to have counselled the couple and it was thought everything was fine. Mr Mweemba said during the fight, a neighbour had to hold the baby.
“After the couple was counselled, the suspect asked to carry the baby, who at that time was in the care of the neighbour, and the baby was surrendered as per the request and the couple left to their quarters,” he said.
However, when they got back to their home, another fight erupted, which led the husband to direct his anger towards the infant, striking the baby in the head with his fist and further threatening to kîll the child.
